RETURNS at the second Strathalbyn store sale for the year followed the present cattle trend, and were down on the last auction.
There were 950 cattle yarded and while some heavier cattle struggled price-wise, lighter weights attracted good bidding.
The opening pen attracted the highest price for steers. JL Hausler had 15 steers, 443 kilograms, make $1160 or $2.61/kg, selling to Princess Royal.
Attracting the second-highest price for steers was SJK Brown Investments, Woodside, with nine Kingarth and Stoney Point-blood steers, 364kg, that made $1120 or $3.07/kg, also sold to Princess Royal.
DL Macallan, Woodchester, sold nine steers, 390kg, for $1095 or $2.80/kg to Princess Royal, along with seven steers, 362kg, for $1020 or $2.81/kg to Landmark Strathalbyn and eight steers, 338kg, for $1000 or $2.95/kg to Thomas Foods International.
TFI also bought 14 steers, 368kg, from GT&JH Brown for $1100 or $2.98/kg.
KD&SW Ielasi, Myponga, sold 13 steers, 362kg, for $1050 or $2.90/kg.
There were plenty of cattle in from Kangaroo Island including seven Bull Oak Well and Sterita Park-bld steers from DM&JC Weatherspoon, which made $980 or $3.06/kg; 14 steers, 318kg, from GB&A Willson, which sold for $960 or $3.01/kg and 15 steers, 297kg, from Johnson Earthmovers, which made $930 or $3.13/kg.
Making some of the highest prices for steers on a per kilogram basis was B&S Jungfer, Strathalbyn, with five Angus-crosses, 266kg, sold for $900 or $3.38/kg to TFI, RB&LM Couchman, KI, with eight Stoney Point/Lancaster-bld steers, 278kg, which made $940 or $3.38/kg and GT Roberts, KI, with nine steers, 227kg, that made $770 or $3.39/kg.
The top price for heifers was $960 or $2.23/kg, for seven at 429kg from JL Hausler, which sold to TFI.
Bayvista made the second highest price for heifers at $940 for 22 Angus, 319kg, equating to $2.94/kg.
Trott & Kenihan, Mount Compass, sold 17 heifers, 358kg, for $870 or $2.43/kg to Princess Royal, while BE Pile, Yankalilla, sold nine Angus heifers, 297kg, for $850 or $2.86/kg.
There were only a few cows yarded, with six Angus with calves at-foot from FJ&KJ Smith making $2000.
B&S Jungfer sold two Angus heifers, which had been running with an Angus bull for three months for $1460.
