STEER prices were fully firm on the pre-Christmas market at Strathalbyn on Friday, averaging $3.25 a kilogram.
There were 1000 cattle offered with light steer calves topping at $3.88/kg.
Steers weighing 300kg to 400 kg av $3.15/kg, with 200-250 kg steers generally selling for $3.60/kg.
Heifers in the 300-350 kg range av $2.90/kg, fully firm on previous sales.
Lighter heifers av $3/kg, with heifer calves weighing less than 200 kg generally selling at $3.17/kg.
Elders Strathalbyn branch manager Danny Reynolds said the sale proved to be very solid, especially in light of the fire at Thomas Foods International’s Murray Bridge processing facility last week.
“The heifer section was again dominated by restockers intent on buying future breeders,” he said.
“From a buying perspective, there was very good support on the heavier end from Princess Royal, Landmark Jamestown and Korunye feedlot.
Mr Reynolds said restockers were well-represented from areas including Strathalbyn, Roseworthy and Mount Pleasant, and there was also good support from Clare and the Upper South East.
Mora McCallum, Milang, sold 12 Angus-cross steers at $1260 and eight heifers at $1000, while J,C,A&E Byrne, Pages Flat, had 18 Angus steers make $1240 and 18 heifers at $1150.
Other heifer sellers included PJ&S Dawson, Dingabledinga, with 12 Angus at $1000 and Bowles Nominees, Mount Compass, with seven at $1000.
JR&JP Fisher, Second Valley, sold 10 Angus steers at $1200, along with 10 Angus heifers at $1060.
HW&HR Bennett, Cape Jervis, had seven Angus steers make $1240, and Kangaroo Island vendors DI&JM Florance, sold four Angus-cross and four Red Angus-cross heifers at $950.
