PRICES at the Strathalbyn Markets on Friday exceeded expectations for agents Elders and Landmark, with CI and SJ Bartlett’s, Yankalilla, pen of 15 February/March-drop Red Angus steers selling for $1220.
Landmark Strathalbyn auctioneer Bradley Walker said it was Strathalbyn’s first sale since June, with a number of vendors offering complete drops of calves.
“It was our first look at this season’s drop calves and it was a great opportunity for graziers to be able to put cattle away,” he said.
“The sale was supported very strongly and we were pleased with the outcome of what the cattle made.”
With steers averaging $3.35 a kilogram to $3.40/kg and upto $3.70/kg, Elders Strathalbyn’s Danny Reynolds said the sale exceeded expectations.
“I thought it was a very solid sale and cattle prices were on par with where they have been across the state,” he said.
Tooperang Beef Cattle, Finniss, yarded 15 March/April drop Hazeldean and TeMania-blood Angus steers, which sold for $1200.
From Mosquito Hill, Adelaide Turbo’s pen of 13 March/April-drop Angus-crosses, weighing 355kg, went for $1170.
Adelaide Turbo also offered a pen of six and a pen of 15 March/April-drops which sold for $1050 and $1020 respectively.
A number of Kangaroo Island graziers brought cattle to Strathalbyn, with AL Eichner, Kingscote, selling nine March/April-drop Boonarkym-bld Black Angus for $1120, while JT, VF&B Howard, Penneshaw, offering 14 December/January-drop South Devons, also at $1120.
AW Ness & KJ Murray, Parndana, sold 11 February/March Simmental-Red Angus steers for $1140.
Quality heifers were also in demand with Adelaide Turbo selling nine March/April-drop Angus-cross heifers for $1120.
Mr Reynolds said heifers averaged $3/kg to $4.15/kg with some lighter heifers up to $3.60/kg.
AW Ness & KJ Murray yarded 13 March/April-drop Simmental-Red Angus heifers, for $1010, while RB&LM Couchman, Duncan, sold 10 March/April-drop Angus-crosses also for $1010.
From Kiki, PK Mattner & Co, sold 12-month-old Shorthorns for $1050.
JT, VF&B Howard sold 18 December/January-drop South Devons for $910. Their second and third pens of 15 South Devons, went for $850.
In the cows with calf-at-foot section, Roseworthy Campus, Roseworthy, sold 13, 2.5-year-old cows, with 17 August-November-drop calves at $2040.
