Sheep and lamb numbers were slightly down to 1760 at the Mount Pleasant market on Thursday last week but an influx of cattle from a local stock dispersal, filled multiple cattle pens and pushed yarding to 317, slightly up on the previous market.
Landmark Fawcett Mount Pleasant’s David Schultz said recent big lamb sales and wooly lambs being shorn held back yarding slightly.
“The lambs were still reasonably fresh but did not have a lot of weight, so it was definitely the lighter end up for sale,” he said.
“It is the time of year that most top lambs are gone and most producers are into their second or third draft.”
He said despite the lighter condition of lambs being offered up, prices were in line with previous sales.
The top price of $142 was paid for nine lambs from Kym Abbott, Eden Valley.
At the top end of the sale, two pens of 10 lambs made $131 from Glenn Howsan, Cromer, and M Cammel, Mount Barker.
One of the largest drafts on offer was from SJ&RJ Dohnt, Eden Valley, who sold 26 lambs at $130.
BT&JL Playford, Norton Summit, sold nine hoggets for $118.
Mr Schultz said with store cattle prices remaining firm, vendors took advantage.
Smart Farming, Mount Torrens, had two Murray Grey preg tested cows make $1620.
Jeff and Fran Henschke, Mount Pleasant, sold five Black Baldy cows with calves at foot for $1820, and two pens of Murray Grey preg tested cows, three for $1520 and seven for $1400.
R Holding, Tungkillo, had a Red Angus steer make $2000, and Hearnden Farms, Keyneton, sold a Limousin steer for $1740.
The next Mount Pleasant market will be held on December 14.
