THE latest results from the states 2016-17 Food and Wine Scorecard data have been revealed, with a record-breaking revenue of $19.95 billion.
Food and wine revenue increased by more than $1 billion on the previous year’s results, representing a 7 per cent increase.
The figures can be contributed partly to the result of a record grain harvest of 11.1 million tonnes in 2016, along with the increased value of the states booming field crops and wine sector.
The Food and Wine ScoreCard is produced by PIRSA and measures the commercial value of the industry using chain analyses.
Food and wine exports now account for 49pc of the states total merchandise exports.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Leon Bignell said the results, released today on National Ag Day, provided a great opportunity to take a moment and acknowledge the significant contributions farmers, fishers, food and beverage producers and related agricultural industries delivered to the state.
“As a state, we remain focused on capitalising on existing opportunities and identifying new ways to increase our market share and profit margin in these sectors,” he said.
Key highlights from the ScoreCard included:
Wine: gross revenue increase to $2.3 billion, with overseas exports valued at $1.47b. The volume of grapes produced increased by 6pc to a value of $658 million, with top exports to China, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, United States of America.
Field Crops: gross revenue increased to $5.3b, with finished foods valued at $1.1b. Top exports were to India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
Livestock: gross revenue increased to $4.8b, with finished foods valued at $3b, and overseas exports at $1.2b. In 2016-17, SA produced a record of 1.3m pigs. Top export markets were US, China, Hong Kong and Japan.
Horticulture: gross revenue was valued at $3b, with finished foods valued at $1.4b, and overseas exports at $270m. Almonds were the best performing horticulture commodity with top markets including Japan, Germany and New Zealand.
Dairy: gross revenue increased to $940m, with finished foods at $369m, and overseas exports at $42m.
Seafood: gross revenue was valued at $908m, finished foods at $501m, and overseas exports at $244m.
