Young ewes to $265
Wethers to $127
A GREAT spread of buyers from across SA and interstate helped push prices up at Jamestown’s feature ewe sale on Thursday last week.
Young ewes were up by $10 to $15 and made to $265, for a line of 201 Moorundie Park-bloods from Wirrilla Holdings, Georgetown, sold to Jones Livestock.
The second highest price was $250 for 129 Moorundie Park-bld young ewes from father and son Mark and Sam Lemon, Gulnare, also bought by Jones Livestock.
Other young ewe sellers making more than $200 included KA&LA Harvie, Booleroo Centre, 103 Lines Hawthorne-blds, that made $220 to Landmark Gawler and Bennett Farm Trust, Pekina, sold 231 Gum Hill-blds for $218 to Thomas De Garis & Clarkson Penola.
Both making $215 for their young ewes were GC&LK Moore, Jamestown, 120 North Ashrose/Maro Creek-blds, sold to Jones Livestock, and N&C Klingner Pty Ltd, Narridy, 181 Springvale North-blds, also to Jones Livestock.
Breezy Hill Ag, Booleroo Centre, sold 128 Karawatha Park-bld young ewes for $201 to Elders Kadina, and Yorkvale Props, Kapunda, sold 99 Nyowee-blds for $200, also to Elders Kadina.
Elders Jamestown livestock manager Jack Coleman said the auction featured one of the best line-ups ever offered at the saleyards.
“We had very good support from all areas, including the South East, Yorke Peninsula, Adelaide Plains and Eyre Peninsula,” he said.
Landmark Jamestown livestock agent Shannon Jaeschke said prices were at a similarly high level to the September feature ewe sale.
“The job was very strong, with excellent competition from local areas and interstate,” he said.
Selling a pen of 1.5-year-old to 2.5yo ewes were KE&JR Ottens, Clare, with 142 Moorundie Park-blds making $166. A line of 144 East Bungaree-blds, 2.5yo, from AH&JL McDonald, Roseworthy, made $160, selling to Elders Strathalbyn.
The top money for 4.5yo ewes was $182 for 187 East Bungaree-blds from DJ&BD Smith, Tarcowie, sold to Elders Mount Gambier.
Two lines made the highest price of $178 for 5.5yo ewes. One line was 134 Baderloo-blds from Garawang, Georgetown, and the other was 96 from Mark and Sam Lemon.
The strongest bidding competition on 5.5yo ewes came from the South East, including Kingston, Coonalpyn and Penola, and Vic areas including Ouyen, Birchip and Kaniva.
JW,JD&BJ Taylor, Melrose, sold 160, 5.5-6.5yo Dohnes, for $110.
Wethers made outstanding money and were $10-$15 dearer on the shorns, and firm to $5 up on the woolly types. The top price of $127 was paid for 256 Gum Hill-blds from CS&AM Simpson, Belalie North.
LJ O’Dea, Yongala, sold 548 Anama-bld wethers at $117 and Long Valley Props, Wilmington, sold 274 Lone Gum-blds at $115 to Princess Royal.
The top price woolly wethers were 115 Lines Gum Hill-blds from KA&KJ Burford, Gladstone, that made $118.
Upalinna Station, Hawker, made the top price for older, 2016-drop wethers, with 214 Moorundie Park-blds making $102.
Thomas Foods International paid the highest price for crossbred lambs at $120 for 175 Days/Boolerview-blds from Durrant Co Pty Ltd, Gladstone.
The largest lines of crossbred lambs came in from Smith Partners Belton, Carrieton, with 292 making $111, 291 at $109, 1051 at $90 and 254 at $79.
Ewe lambs made to $122 for 146 Bradfield-blds from GR&JE Thomas, Tarcowie.
The next Jamestown market is on Thursday, November 2, with a yarding of about 20,000 expected.
