Keith’s Diesel and Dirt Derby raced home the winner for the community award at Brand SA’s 2017 Regional Showcase, held in Whyalla, on Friday last week.
The hard-working committee has dreamed big and delivered over the past six years, including holding Australia’s only Header Demolition Derby, lawnmower racing, motorcross bikes and a tractor pull.
This year they even hosted a round of the Australian Jet Sprint Championships after building a jet boat track.
Derby president Glen Simpson says it is pleasing to see the committee recognised for such a great community fundraiser.
This year more than 10,000 spectators flocked to Keith and organisers are hoping to attract even more on March 24 next year, adding jets and helicopters to the program.
“We keeping adding each year. We don’t take anything away,” Mr Simpson said.
“It is so unique with everything happening on the same day – you can go and see a jet boat race on its own or you can see a tractor pull on its own, but you come here pay your money at the gate and see it all.
“And then you can come back the next year because you haven’t seen it all the first year.”
