THERE was a strong turnout of return bidders at Robert and Pat MacDonald’s eighth annual Paramount White Suffolk and Poll Dorset auction at Kersbrook on Tuesday last week.
Last year the sale was held in trying conditions, coming on the tail end of the superstorm that caused power outages across SA, but the sun was shining on this year’s auction.
This year was the final sale of Paramount’s Poll Dorset stud, but the MacDonalds will continue to breed their fine line of White Suffolks.
There were 28 White Suffolks sold out of 55 offered, averaging $787.
Return buyer EW Bormann & Partners, Sanderston, paid $1500 to secure the top price White Suffolk ram. The ram weighed 121 kilograms and measured 188.8 on the Carcase Plus Index.
White Suffolk rams were also sought after by another return client Falkenberg Family Trust, Cambrai, which bought five to $800.
RS&SM Cox, Palmer, purchased two White Suffolks to $1000, averaging $850.
MP&SJ Brown, Keyneton, bought four White Suffolks ranging from $700 to $900, and M Guthrie & Sons, Gumeracha, also bought four, paying between $700-$800.
Other White Suffolk buyers included B&V Duldig, Mount Pleasant, who took three rams from $700-$900.
There were 11 Poll Dorsets sold out of 18 offered, averaging $732.
R Rossini, Wistow, paid the top Poll Dorset price of $900.
DE Atze, Sedan, bought five Poll Dorsets at $700 each.
Mr MacDonald was pleased with the way the sale was conducted.
“I’m always happy to see return buyers,” he said.
The sale was conducted by Landmark Fawcett Mount Pleasant, and Landmark Gawler agent Glen Keast was the auctioneer.
The overall sale average was $774.
