Kongorong beef producer Blue Lake Station has won bragging rights as the state’s top beef producer at the 2017 Meat Standards Australia Excellence in Eating Quality Awards held at the Hewett Function Centre, near Gawler.
The awards recognise businesses which have achieved outstanding compliance to MSA specifications in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Over the past two financial years Michael Famularo and business partner James Sackl have achieved an average MSA index of 63.59 for their Angus cattle they breed and buy in to finish on their Lower South East property.
This is well above the state average 60.54.
Of Blue Lake Station’s cattle graded there was a 99.2 per cent compliance, putting them at the top of 760 registered producers who consigned cattle over the two years.
Englefield Grange, Wandearah, took out the most outstanding beef producer in the grainfed section with cattle produced from their 300 head feedlot.
The event also included a forum on MSA’s 2020 vision and how producers can make their perfect MSA index.
