A melting pot of confident new and return bidders set the scene for Pindari's 51st annual on-property auction at Waterloo on Tuesday last week, helping the stud to a $2700 top price.
The Schwartz family sold 30 Poll Merino rams from 40 offered and eight Dohne rams from 10 offered in the main auction.
The $2700 top price Poll Merino ram was sold to return buyer of more than 30 years, Andrew Baxter, Manoora, who also bought another ram for $1900.
The 14-month-old weighed 89 kilograms and had wool measurements of 19.2 micron, 16.7 coefficient of variation, 99.6 comfort factor, and 34.5 eye muscle depth.
Mr Baxter said although he looked for dual purpose traits, the top ram was selected on its wool quality.
“We like the style of wool Pindari are putting on their sheep and its reaping rewards for us,” he said.
“I select a ram on what appeals to my eye, generally its soft handling white wool that catches my eye and the ram also had a long body to help improve lamb size for the meat trade.”
Pindari stud principal Robin Schwartz was impressed with the sale’s clearance, particularly because more rams were offered this year to provide a larger selection for clients.
“We aimed to present a lineup of rams with high quality wool and eye muscle depth, and the top ram definitely had these traits,” he said.
Shayne Willmott, Dunira Prime Lamb, Manoora, secured the top price Dohne ram at $1700.
It weighed 90 kilograms and had wool tests of 20M, 13.5CV and 99.8CF, with 43EMD.
Mr Willmott bought six rams, averaging $1233.
Sale volume buyer with four rams to $2000, averaging $1500, were AJ&JM Bastian, through Elders Roseworthy.
The sale was conducted by Landmark Burra with Leo Redding auctioneering.
