A SOUTH East school has made big steps at incorporating agriculture into its curriculum, hosting its own “mini-STEM expo”, complete with farm visits.
Kongorong Primary School principal Michelle Hunt said farming was a good way to learn more about the concepts of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Across two days, students were taken on tours of Mount Gambier district dairy farm Manuka Heights, with the chance to see a robotic dairy in action, feed calves and look at aquaculture. They were then taken to the Penola Plant Shearing shed to see the mechanics of shearing.
Mrs Hunt said this was an opportunity to promote STEM with activity-based learning, while also introducing potential future pathways for the students.
She said the school was also in the early stages of setting up its own miniature agriculture learning area with chickens, aquaculture and vegetable patches.
“It can help students understand paddock-to-plate,” she said.
