BELTED GALLOWAYS
A Belted Galloway junior champion bull noticed for its future breeding potential won the top title of grand champion bull under judge Jake Phillips, Naracoorte.
Whola Hut Ziggie, exhibited by Judith McCallum, Whola Hut Belted Galloways, Mount Torrens, was applauded by Mr Phillips for its soundness and conformation.
Led by Michael Towill, Millicent, Whola Hut Ziggie was sired by Park Perseaus and out of Clanfingon Venus, winner of grand and senior champion cow.
The grand champion bull weighed 310 kilograms and had a 61-square centimetre eye muscle area, two millimetre rib fat and 2mm rump.
Mr Philips said Whola Hut Ziggie displayed performance and sound testicular development.
“I had a lot of young bulls to choose from, so what I was looking for were bulls that had the foundation to go forward and become sires,” he said.
Dam of the grand champion bull, Clanfingon Venus, Whola Hut, won grand champion female and was commended for its maternal traits and ability to rear an exceptional four-week-old calf at foot.
Sired by Southfield Double O Seven UK, Mr Phillips said the five-year-old was extremely industry relevant.
“It had a great udder and productiveness,” he said.
“It had ability to carry red meat and be maternally sound.”
