A SMALL crowd of repeat buyers were rewarded with top quality at extreme values at Carcuma North’s 10th annual Poll Merino ram sale at Peake.
On Wednesday last week, stud principals Grant and Carolyn Johnson sold 19 of 29 fine-medium Poll Merinos averaging $963.
They had very good carcase traits and were covered with well-defined and nourished wools.
Despite the top price being only half of last year’s $3200 high, the average was up $46 with an extra ram sold.
Nine buyers were successful, but five of these only bought single lots, accounting for the lack of competition.
Regular top-end buyers, the Heym family, Peake, bought seven rams averaging $1386, including the three $1600 saletoppers.
The top rams, sold as single lots, were all in the first pen of three and their evenness in quality matched the evenness in price.
In the meat sheep breed offering from the Johnsons’ Select stud, 13 of 23 young Poll Dorset and White Suffolks sold to $850, averaging $662.
They were all only 12 months of age.
Neville and Kevin Heintze, Murrayville, Vic, paid the $850 top price twice in the six Poll Dorsets they bought.
It was their 21st year buying from the stud and they were presented with a gift to mark the milestone.
Paul Carling, Parrakie, bought the two top White Suffolk rams at $800 each.
Landmark and Elders were joint selling agents.
