THERE were some good buying opportunities at the Mount Gambier July store market on Friday, with most classes of cattle selling easier on last month’s rates and in line with the recent easier trending prime market.
It was Mount Gambier’s smallest yarding of the year, with 1183 cattle offered.
Landmark Mount Gambier’s Jeff Olafsen was “impressed with the quality lineup of black and black baldy steers, which sold at rates in line with other store sales in the district”.
“Although prices were off the highs of February and March, with cattle going to mostly local areas of Millicent, Penola, and Mount Gambier,” he said.
He said feedlot buyers were strong on European Union cattle “with a bit of weight”, with cows and calves selling well.
Heavier Angus steers 450 kilograms-plus sold from $2.93/kg to $3.26/kg; 400-450kg were easier at $3.07-$3.55/kg; while heavy coloured steers sold at $2.96-$3.51/kg.
Nampara Pastoral Co, Lucindale, hit the ground running, buying the first three pens of heavier Angus steers; 13 Ballengeich blood Angus steers, August/September 2015 drop av 516kg at $1,510 or $2.93/kg sold a/c Waverley, Hamilton Vic; 9 Angus cross steers, 12-14 months av 511kg at $1,520 or $2.97/kg sold a/c Fox Park, Allendale East and 9 Angus cross steers av 469kg at $1,530 or $3.26/kg a/c Neathvale, Heywood.
Thomas Foods International bought 90 steers, including the entire draft of 51 European Union accredited March/April 2016 drop, Angus and Simmental cross steers offered a/c Wheal Farms, Thornlea, with weights from 402kg to 440kg for an average of $1,481. The Wheal Family’s top draft av 440kg, sold at $1,520 or $3.45/kg.
Thomas Foods paid the day’s top price of $1,540 or $3.33/kg, for 11 EU accredited Ardno blood 14 month old Hereford steers, av 462kg, sold a/c Lowan, Kalangadoo.
Jakero, Mil Lel, sold 15 Angus cross steers av 465kg at $1,490 or $3.20/g to Ray White Keatley Livestock, their second draft av 348kg sold at $1,300 or $3.38/kg to Scott Creek Livestock.
Mid weight Angus steers 350-400kg sold at rates from $3.33 to $3.70/kg; coloured steers in this weight range sold from $3.04 to $3.49/kg.
Angus steers in from 300-350kg, sold firm at prices from $3.37 to $3.82/kg, as did the coloured steers of the same weights, selling from $3.01 to $3.93/kg. Lighter Angus steers under 300kg sold firm from $3.72 to $3.92/kg; lighter coloured steers sold slightly cheaper, from $3.67 to $4.12c/kg.
Childerley Park, Naracoorte sold 37 Stony Point and Woonallee blood, EU accredited Angus/Simmental steers for an average of $1,228. Their top draft av 348kg, sold to Thomas Foods International at $1,290 or $3.70/kg, while a second draft av 297kg, was bought by Miller Whan & John at $1,165 or $3.92/kg.
Milroy Pastoral, Mingbool sold 18 Angus steers, 12-14 months av 416kg at $1,460 or $3.51/kg to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson, who also bought 18 Banquet blood Angus steers av 400kg at $1,420 or $3.55/kg a/c Regent’s Gate, Heathmore.
D&R Low, Millicent sold 7 Glatz Black Angus blood Angus steers 14-15 months av 451kg at $1,430 or $3.17/kg to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson, their second draft av 406kg selling at $1,320 or $3.25/kg to John Chay & Co, Millicent.
Glendoo Pastoral, Mt Gambier sold 24 Angus and Angus cross steers, 14-15 months, for an average of $1,308. Their top draft av 398kg sold to Miller Whan & John, at $1,335 or $3.35/kg.
Sandown Park, Bordertown sold 15 Angus cross steers av 310kg at $1,185 or $3.82/kg to Miller Whan & John, their second (unweighed) draft selling at $1,125 to O’Connor & Graney.
Dukalskis Farming, Mumbannar, Vic sold their annual draft of 170 spring drop Pathfinder and Coolana blood Angus steers with weights ranging from 316-360kg to average $1,374. Their top draft, av $360kg, sold at $1,300 or $3.61/kg to Landmark Mt Gambier.
Kinaruar Pastoral Co, Mt Gambier sold 8 Angus cross steers av 381kg at $1,270 or $3.33/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock, Mt Gambier. This vendor also sold 14 Murray Grey steers with weights from 337kg to 375kg, which sold for an average of $1,114, their top draft av 375kg selling at $1,250 or $3.33/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock.
Kuchel Family Trust, Meningie, sold 11 Angus steers, 8-11 months av 331kg at $1,170 or $3.53/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock, a second draft av 290kg selling at $1,080 or $3.72/kg to Miller Whan & John and 3 Hereford cross steers 8-11 months av 290kg at $1,195 or $4.12/kg.
Kingston Park, Kingston SE sold 16 Pathfinder blood Angus steers, 14-15 months av 419kg at $1,310 or $3.13/kg to Miller Whan & John, a second draft of 11 Angus cross steers av 329kg selling at $1,120 or $3.40/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock.
A limited selection of 41 cows with calves at foot were offered, the top price of $2,620 paid by Green Triangle Livestock for 8, 5 year old Weeran blood Angus cows with 8 Weeran blood Angus calves at foot sold a/c Highbury Trading, Mumbannar.
PL&WD Lowe sold 12 Red Angus/Simmental cows, 3rd-5th calvers, rejoined to Angus/Simmental bulls with 12 calves at foot at $2,540 to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson; Mountain View, Suttontown sold 8 mixed age Angus cows, not rejoined with 8 Angus calves at foot at $2,220 to Miller Whan & John; and S&H Mules Tantanoola, sold 5 Angus cross heifers, first calvers, with 5 calves at foot at $2,420 to John Chay & Co, Millicent.
Only a handful of pregnancy tested in calf females were sold, Miller Whan & John paying top price for 5 Angus/Friesian heifers $1,425 a/c Talkinera Pastoral, Meningie, also buying their second draft of the same, at $1,275.
Around 300 heifers were offered for sale on Friday, most classes selling cheaper on last month’s rates. 400kg+ heifers sold from $2.46 to $2.99/kg; 350-400kg made from $2.68 to $3.09/kg; 300-350kg heifers were an exception, selling firm on June rates, from $2.94 to $3.19/kg, under 300kg made from $3.07 to $3.65/kg.
