QUALITY cattle attracted strong prices at the Mount Pleasant market on Thursday last week.
Landmark Fawcett principal Colin Fawcett said the cattle were of “surprising” quality considering the time of the season.
“I think there is still a bit of feed about, they're coming off a pretty good summer,” he said.
In the cattle section, RD Fuller, Eden Valley, sold two Angus cows with calves at-foot for $1900, while two Hereford cows and calf units from SP Holt, Eden Valley, sold for $1500.
AP&KS Jaeschke, Eden Valley, sold three pregnancy-tested in-calf Shorthorns for $1500, while JM Chambers, Mount Pleasant, sold one Hereford heifer at $1380.
Mr Fawcett said younger cattle were in particularly good condition, attracting the most demand.
“The steers, by far, were the highlight of the day,” he said.
Birdwood Horseworks sold one Angus steer at $1660, while Wongara, Mount Pleasant, sold a crossbred steer for $1650.
Liberty Pastoral, Flaxman Valley, had six Angus steers go for $1440, and five Angus calves from DC Holt, Eden Valley, went for $1230.
AW&DL Gray, Springton, sold two Murray Greys for $1460, while one Hereford heifer from JM Chambers, went for $1380.
With 800 sheep and lambs on offer, Mr Fawcett said the quality of the stock was on par for this time of the year.
“Sheep and lamb numbers were obviously back, they were the very tail-end of the lambs,” he said.
“The quality wasn't there that has been there in the past.”
Crossbred lambs made up to $160, for AJK Pastoral, Myponga, selling 10.
J Krause, Palmer, sold 24 first-cross lambs at $155, while S Gordon, Mount Pleasant, sold 21 Dorper lambs at $138.
Lock Family Trust, Monarto, sold seven hoggets at $146, while JD Fromm, Mannum, also sold seven hoggets at $146.
The sale was supported by butchers and buyers from local areas, Adelaide Hills, Murray Bridge and the Mid North.
The next Mount Pleasant sale is on Thursday, July 13.
