ENTRY closures are coming up fast for many of the competitions at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show.
Grains and fodder committee chair Bill Rowett said he would like to see a big field of entries, including for the feature grain – oats.
“It was the biggest grain harvest the state had ever had and a lot of people have got very good grains, with high protein,” he said.
Mr Rowett said there was an extra benefit in entering some of the masses of hay produced, with testing for protein and digestibility taken as part of the competition.
“For the cost of entry, growers can get tests done and know exactly what their hay is,” he said.
Entries for grain and fodder close on June 2.
In the dairy cattle ring a school’s competition will be held within the junior section for the first time.
Dairy cattle and pig committee deputy chair Ray Fiebiger said this was building on interest expressed from schools.
“We did have a couple of schools represented last year,” he said. “This year we are running a school’s section so hope to attract a few more.”
This year’s feature breed is Holstein and Mr Fiebiger said, despite the industry downturn, the committee was hopeful of good entries.
Entries to the dairy section close on June 16, as do goats and alpacas. Entries for open cookery, led steers and beef cattle – feature breed Santa Gertrudis – close on June 9; pigs and mohair close on June 30, horticulture, honey, wool and sheep – Suffolk feature – on July 14 and horse entries on May 19.
