It was an extremely wet day out at the Jamestown sheep market on Thursday last week, with about fifty millimetres of rain falling in 24 hours. But, the heavy rain did not dampen buyers enthusiasm, with all types trending firm to dearer.
Landmark Jamestown agent Shannon Jaeschke said it was a good, strong sale.
“There were a lot of scanned in-lamb Merino ewes offered, and the better lines sold to to very strong demand from local areas and the South East,” he said. “Seeing that bit of rain brings a bit more confidence.”
A major feature of the market was the run of 1300 Merino ewes, SIL to Merino rams, from CC Cooper & Co, Jamestown, from their Wonga station out of Broken Hill, NSW. The Coopers also offered 1600 ewes from their Madura Plains property on the Nullarbor.
Their 3yo Wonga ewes, Gum Hill-bld, topped the market at $214.
The Cooper’s 5yo Wonga ewes made $184, and their 6yo, Gunbar-bld Madura Plains ewes sold to $125.
Another major feature was 2100 SIL and scanned undetectable ewes from Litchfield Pastoral Co, Lyndhurst, which made to $170 for 5yo ewes.
Elders Jamestown livestock manager Jack Coleman said older wethers sold to excellent demand, lifting $5 to $8, with no real difference between secondary types and the tops.
Making the highest price for 2015-drop wethers were Martins Well Pastoral, Hawker, with 1050 Blue-Hills-bloods that topped at $120, with the seconds making $115.
Wartaka Pastoral Co, via Port Augusta, sold 700 2015-drop wethers, with the tops making $117 and the seconds $115.
Topping the 2016-drop wether section were Walmona Pastoral, Truro, selling 300 Rices Creek-blds for $124.
Bringing in the second highest price for 2016-drop wethers was Samsons Well Pty Ltd, via Morgan, with 200 Kelvale-blds for $120.
South Gap Pastoral, via Port Augusta, made the same price of $118 for their 2015 and 2016-drop, Glenville-bld wethers, and also sold six-year-old ewes for $138.
TG Markey, Peterborough, sold 210 2016-drop wethers for $118 and Springfield Props, Cradock, sold 400, with the tops making $115 and the seconds $90.
Walmona topped the crossbred lamb section, selling 50 at $130.
Smith Partners Belton, Orroroo, sold 130 crossbred lambs,with the tops making $127 and the seconds $100, and AC&H Michael, Quorn, sold 150, with the tops going for $125 and the seconds $100.
