The acceptance of the Spry family’s balanced approach to breeding paid dividends at their annual bull and genetics sale held on property at “Ardlui”, Wagga Wagga on Friday.
A complete clearance was recorded over all categories with 40 Shorthorn bulls topping the sale at $23,000 to average $10,600, 12 Angus bulls reaching $18,000 to average $11,583 and three Angus/Shorthorn composite bulls averaging $8000 with a $13,000 top
The offering began with a selection of high quality shorthorn genetics with a four-year-old cow Sprys Athletes Pattie H236 bringing $14,000 from Spencer Family Shorthorns, Yuroke, Victoria.
While two unjoined heifers bought $5000 and $6000 respectively purchased by the Cooper family, Gunnedah, and Kell family, Tumut.
A pregnant recipient female carrying an embryo imported from Canada was purchased for $8000 by Calrossy Anglican School, Tamworth.
Frozen embryos topped at $2600 each selling to CN Seeds, England for The Grove Kookaburra W735 embryos out of The Grove Primrose A742.
While another lot of Primrose A742 embryos, this time by Eloora Baker G31, sold to Outback Shorthorns, Culcairn, for $2200 each.
Top-end Shorthorn sires were in hot demand for both stud and commercial duties. Outback Sprys Solid M259, a Sprys Rock Solid H5 son, sold for $23,000 to Wagga Wagga commercial producers AM Childs.
In the same fashion Ford Cattle Company, Monkerai, topped at $22,000 for Outback Sprys Joker L287.
Long-term supporter Lyndall and Tony Bennett, Dromore Station, Wilcannia, parted with $18,000 each for Sprys Primroses Balance L41, a homozygous poll son of Outback Sprys Balance G266 and Sprys Combo L68, a homozygous poll son of Sprys Junction.
The Grove Shorthorns, Condamine, Qld,, also parted with $18,000 for their selection Outback Sprys Grand Canyon M254 the number one export maternal animal of 2015 born calves.
Angus bulls topped at $18,000 for Sprys-W Geko L553 to Wangolina Pty Ltd, Kingston SE, SA, who also purchased two Shorthorn bulls and averaged $14,000 for the three. Yerwal Estate, Naracoorte, SA, paid $16,000 for a yearling son of Connealy Capitalist 028 Sprys-W Supreme M505.
Ford Cattle Company were the volume buyers putting together 11 bulls consisting of six Shorthorns and five Angus for an average of $10,909.
Despite a solid sale affordability was present with 18 bulls or a third of the catalogue selling between $4000 and $7000.
