WHEN Stephen Obst moved from being a winemaker to a station owner 11 years ago, goats were making $2.40 a kilogram.
While that price was only a third of the present returns, at the time it was still well-worth the effort to Mr Obst.
“When I first bought Pualco station, which is 60 kilometres south of Yunta, it was originally going to be for sheep,” he said.
“But, there were so many goats there already, it just seemed to me there’d be more income from goats.
“They had no competition, and there were plenty of watering points to bring them in.”
Today, Mr Obst runs a depot at Truro, and a property at Worlds End, where smaller goats are grown out.
“When I first started up, there was a big question about whether this would be sustainable, but the market for goats has grown every year,” he said.
