TWO SA Poll Hereford studs, Kerlson Pines and Oak Downs, joined forces to buy the $36,000 sale-topping bull at Mawarra Genetics’ successful 44th annual sale at Longford, Vic, last week.
The Keith and Bordertown-based studs travelled to the sale after being impressed with the young August 2015-drop sire Mawarra Ohio L416 in the pre-sale video.
The price smashed the Sykes family’s previous best money of $22,000.
The 844-kilogram poll bull was a son of Allendale Anzac E114 and out of Mawarra Minerva 774, which has bred two bulls retained in the stud, and another destined for the Wodonga Hereford Show & Sale in Vic next month.
“It (Ohio) was structurally sound with length and muscle right down the hindleg, which we were looking for and its figures stacked up well in the top of the breed,” Kerlson Pines stud principal Mark Wilson said.
Ohio’s Breedplan figures were in the top 1pc for 400-day growth and top 5pc for 200- and 600-day weight and carcase weight.
Sixteen Anzac E114 sons averaged $8750.
Another Anzac son heading to SA was Mawarra Opportunity Knocks, which sold for $7000 to Bin Bin Station, Keilira.
Horned two-year-old bull Mawarra Exceptional made the $29,000 second-highest price, selling to Karoonda Herefords, Gelantipy, Vic.
