MOUNT PLEASANT
Yarding: 1300 sheep and lambs, 130 cattle
Steers to $1960
Heifer vealers to $1440
Crossbred lambs to $152
THERE was a large yarding of sheep and lambs at the monthly Mount Pleasant market on Thursday last week, with strong competition for good quality crossbred lambs.
Landmark Fawcett livestock auctioneer Colin Fawcett said prices and demand for sheep were high, while cattle prices eased slightly but were still strong.
Processors were the main buyers for sheep and trade cattle, while there was a wide spread of store cattle buyers.
Mr Fawcett said numbers were up on the previous yarding, but he expected a wane in coming months.
“It’s just that time of the year where the bulk of stock are gone,” he said.
One of Thursday’s successful vendors was Terlinga Farms, Tungkillo, which made the top price for crossbred lambs, selling 25 at $152 to Thomas Foods International. The same vendor sold another pen of crossbred lambs at $148 to Australian Lamb Company.
HH Foletta, Mount Pleasant, sold 23 crossbred lambs at $145, while RM McGorman, Sanderston, sold 21 ewe lambs at $132 to Andrew Gray, Woodside.
Ridgecroft, Woodside, sold seven Suffolk ewes at $140 to Powell Livestock, Harrogate.
In the cattle ring, P&W Bennett, Mount Pleasant, made the top price for steers, selling six Murray Greys at $1960 to TFI, and another two at $1500 to Princess Royal.
PA&FT Frahn, Mannum, sold five store steers at $1170 to Princess Royal, while DT Carter, Eudunda, had two Friesian cows at $1400 to TFI.
CM Bond, Mannum, sold two Red Poll milk calves at $1500 to Meat Barn, and a heifer vealer at $1440 to TFI.
The next Mount Pleasant market is on April 6.
