Wethers to $124
SIL ewes to $220
A smaller crowd and lack of interstate buyers resulted in a slightly softer sheep market at Jamestown on Thursday last week, compared to the red hot sale a fortnight earlier.
Wethers sold to $124 for 309 October-shorn, May/June-drop Mulloorie-bloods from Tohl Bros, Burra, bought by Landmark Riverton. This was $10 less than the top price from the previous sale.
The top price for scanned in-lamb ewes of $220 went to Glenrest Trading, Jamestown, for 326 November-shorn Faraway Hills-bld May-June 2014-drops, SIL to a White Suffolk ram, which sold to Landmark Balaklava. It was the only line SIL to a terminal sire offered.
SIL ewes sold to $249 at the February market.
Elders Jamestown livestock manager Jack Coleman said the best 2016-drop wether lambs sold to firm competition, pricing from $116-$124, while secondary types eased $5-$8 a head, ranging from $77-$99.
Older wethers dropped $8-$10, ranging from $99-$110, he said.
Braemar Station, via Burra, sold about 2500 wethers, hoping to target feedlot buyers.
The Merino portion – mainly March-shorn July/September-drop Faraway Hills-blds – sold to $116.50, while the SAMM-Merino portion – 690 March-shorn Lawral Park-bld July/September-drops – made to $128 for 483 and $119 for 207 head.
Jumbuck Pastoral, via Tarcoola, also had a big offering – 4500 Gunbar-bld wethers and SIL ewes.
Its wethers sold to $110 for a mixed-age pen of 144 Bulgunnia Station February-shorns, while its ewes sold to $158 for 465 Mulgathing Station April/May 2015-drops. A second pen of 521 SIL Jumbuck ewes sold at $151 to Spence Dix & Co.
CC Cooper & Co, Jamestown, again offered a large line of Gunbar-bld wethers and ewes from its recently-purchased Madura Plains property in WA.
The wethers sold to $110 for 630 April/May 2015-drops, while a second pen of 425 made $103.
SIL Cooper ewes sold to $123 for 213 May/June 2012-drops, bought by Landmark Streaky Bay.
Mutooroo Pastoral Company, via Cockburn, was also selling from its Lilydale Station, via Yunta.
The February-shorn May/June-drop Mutooroo-bld wethers sold to $98 for 269, bought by Jones Livestock, while a second pen of 82 sold at $77 to Landmark Gawler.
SIL Mutooroo ewes sold to $110 for 874 May/June 2010-drops, bought by Landmark Broken Hill, NSW, while a second mixed-age pen of 135 made $88 to Elders Jamestown.
Mr Coleman said the ewe market dropped up to $50 in some places, but generally $30-$40 overall.
JPS Investments offered three pens of January-shorn Collinsville-bld ewes as part of a flock reduction.
The 244, 2015-drops made $172, 213, 2014-drops sold at $164, while the 141, 2013-drops made $161 – all sold to local producer Jordy Kitschke, who was chasing larger-framed ewes.
