Australia’s best shearers and woolhandlers battled it out on the boards at the Golden Shears in New Zealand last week, but also competing were two young up-and-comers.
Shearers Brandon Waters, Warramboo, and Dane Frederickson, Tumby Bay, were selected from the 2016 tafeSA improver schools as the inaugural ambassadors to attend the event.
The other tafeSA ambassador was woolhandler Laura Erickson, Tailem Bend.
All three spent time in NZ sheds with Macintosh Contracting.
tafeSA shearer training coordinator Glenn Haynes said the trio were selected for their quality of work and willingness to learn.
“It exposes them to the work ethic required to shear 400 sheep, but also shows them that it can end up with you representing your country,” he said.
Australian Wool Innovation sponsored the trio’s airfares. The shearers received a toolkit valued at $2500 from Heiniger and Prime Super has paid for Ms Erickson to complete her woolclassing certificate.
