STRONG interest in genetics had the Maryvale Limousin’s bull top price more than double, while the average lifted almost $1700 at their on-property sale at Kapunda on Wednesday.
The top price bull and female each reached a $12,250 price tag, with both heading for WA, to the Unison Limousin stud of repeat buyers Kevin and Sue Nettleton, Boyanup.
Mr Nettleton said the figures on the bull suited their location and breeding program.
“It ticked all the boxes,” he said.
The two-year-old Maryvale Lucrative L502 was from an imported American sire, Wulfs Xtractor, and weighed in at 726 kilograms.
It scored high in its estimated breeding values for calving ease at 3.8, with a milk score of 10, a docility of 43 and a domestic terminal dollar index of $55.
Maryvale principal Matt Vogt said the bull had good growth and structure.
“It is everything we look for in a Limousin bull,” he said.
The top female price was paid for nine-month-old Maryvale Maple, which was imported as an embryo from Canada, sired by GHR Polled Aftershock, with SKL Polled Lady as the dam.
It was sold with its recipient mother Palmdale Velvet, which was preg-tested in calf to Maryvale Legend.
Mr Vogt said it exhibited a good shape and type that fit with their breeding.
“It’s a real stylish heifer,” he said.
Mr Nettleton said the genetics in the heifer had appealed to them.
“We already have some Polled Aftershock embryos on the ground, born this year,” he said.
“This heifer will complement that.”
The Nettletons also took home another heifer and a bull.
Mr Nettleton said this was their fifth year buying at the Maryvale sale.
He said the Maryvale stud had been a significant influence on Limousin genetics within WA.
Cattle were sold to five states, including WA, Tas, NSW, Vic and throughout SA.
Lot one, 23-month-old heifer Maryvale Maize, sold to DL&CJ Jones, Launceston, Tas, for $7500.
A 2014-drop cow, Maryvale Kylah, which had been joined with national grand champion bull Birubi Kaizer and Maryvale Federa, PTIC, sold to Raven Limousins, Coonalpyn, at $7750.
Of the 15 bulls on offer, 12 were sold, while 10 of the 12 females sold under the hammer, with the two remaining, sold shortly after the conclusion of the auction.
The sale was conducted by Landmark Beaton Agencies Kapunda with Leo Redden wielding the gavel.
