STONEY Point Performance Angus stud’s ninth annual bull sale on Monday drew buyers from far and wide, resulting in one of SA Angus Week’s biggest lifts in average – up more than $1600.
The car park at the stud’s Naracoorte sale complex was packed with a record 68 registered bidders from SA, Vic and the NT.
In a total clearance, 90 bulls sold, averaging $7056.
New and repeat clients bid with confidence on the superb line-up, ensuring the sale’s success.
The May to July 2015-drops were among the youngest bulls on offer for the week, but were well-grown with plenty of carcase merit.
Six bulls made $10,000 or more, but it was an AI-bred son of United States sire Sydgen Black Pearl 2006, which rocketed to the $12,500 sale high.
Lot 7 – Stoney Point Lascelles L179 – was bought by BT&E Ling, Murraup, Mount Benson.
Murraup’s Alex Ling said Lascelles was a “very favourable heifer bull”, impressed with the spread of Breedplan figures of low birthweight to high 200-day weight, and tremendous carcase shape.
Two bulls made the sale’s $11,000 second-highest price.
Frank Island, Millicent, paid this for lot 2 – SP Lascivious L229 – a bull in the top 15 per cent for all four breed indexes.
Moonee Hills, Meningie, paid $11,000 for lot 3 – SP Last Tycoon L141. The KCF Bennett Absolute son had easily the highest Breedplan eye muscle area figure in the catalogue at +8.2.
The highlight of the sale was the consistent bidding, with buyers quick to put their hands up at $5000 to $6000 for their marked lots.
The main bidding strength came from the Upper South East, including repeat buyer Ian Johnson, Amherst, Willalooka, who bought six bulls averaging $7667.
Doug and Di Ashby, Tintinara, were successful on four bulls averaging $8000 and Yarlie Pastoral Co, Meningie, bought four bulls averaging $6500.
Eleven bulls sold between $4000 and $5000.
Stud director Perry Gunner was thrilled to see so much new interest.
“In an environment that is good for Angus breeders, it all added up to a very good sale,” he said.
“We had a very good field day and everyone was impressed with the bulls, so it was a recipe for success.”
Landmark and Spence Dix & Co conducted the sale.
