A WILD dog trapping workshop will be held at Penong, on the far west of the Eyre Peninsula, in February to help participants learn about management options for wild dogs.
Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula authorised officer Andrew Sleep says the workshop will provide a great opportunity for landholders to undertake small group training with well-regarded trapper and trainer Paul Billsborough, from Wildpest Management.
“This one and a half day workshop covers a range of topics from basic equipment for trapping and how to set a trap, to legal responsibilities and regulations and health and safety obligations, which are essential skills for landholders to undertake effective wild dog trapping on their property,” Mr Sleep said.
Wild dogs can cause significant damage to livestock production enterprises, particularly sheep, through predation and disease transfer.
Farmers and pastoralists should not underestimate the intelligence of wild dogs and should take into account their enhanced senses of smell, sight and hearing when trying to outsmart them.
“This free workshop will provide landholders with the tools and information to feel confident in carrying out appropriate management of wild dogs,” Mr Sleep said.
Participants will gain practical skills in how to recognise signs of dog activity as well as how to implement effective trapping regimes.
This workshop is part of the Australian Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper.
