NET PEST: Jack Cullinan, Carstairs Station, via Pooncarie, NSW, said he pulled more than 200 small carp out of one net recently when yabbying in Far West NSW.
OTHER than water shortages, another concern being voiced is the amount of juvenile carp being caught by local fishers in the Lower Darling and River Murray.
NSW Department of Primary Industries senior fisheries manager Matt Barwick said recent river conditions had been ideal for carp spawning, such as rising waters in their preferred habitat – vegetation on floodplains.
“This is why we need to consider using the carp virus to dramatically reduce carp numbers and impacts,” he said.
