A GRDC grains research update at Loxton on February 9 aims to help Murray Mallee graingrowers to be on the front foot ahead of autumn sowing programs.
Entomology professor Frank Peairs, from the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management at Colorado State University in the United States, will headline the update, sharing his knowledge on management of Russian wheat aphid, which was detected in the local region and elsewhere in SA, Vic and NSW for the first time last year.
One of the world’s leading RWA research authorities, Dr Peairs will outline the latest understandings and lessons to come out of the US where RWA is an established cropping pest.
GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair Keith Pengilley says the update will be of enormous benefit to local growers and their advisers as they put in place plans for their 2017 cropping programs.
“Being informed about issues that could be a factor this coming season – such as RWA – is vital and the Update at Loxton will play an important role in equipping growers with the latest information coming out of the research and development pipeline,” he said.
Also presenting at the update will be Simon Vogt from Rural Directions, who will discuss effective and practical use of precision technology.
Mr Vogt will provide a case study assessment of return on investment from adoption of a range of precision technology options.
Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide will detail progress to date on research into extending the longevity of herbicides through integrated weed management, as well as new chemistries coming on to the market.
SARDI pulse research scientist Jenny Davidson will look at the pulse disease management implications for the season ahead based on disease impacts in 2016, while Stephen Davies from the Department of Agriculture and Food WA will offer insights into soil amelioration techniques that are working for growers in his state.
Supported by Mallee Sustainable Farming, the update at the Loxton Hotel will be from 9am to 1pm, followed by lunch.
