THERE was a big selection of breeding ewes available at the Jamestown sheep market on Thursday last week, with 2.5-year-olds selling to $182.
Young ewes sold to $190 for 96 North Ashrose-bloods from RN Robinson, Jamestown, but most sales were between $120 to $160.
Other sellers at the top end of the young ewes included Kimric Enterprises, Riverton, selling 109 Rices Creek-blds at $182, and Aramaa Props, Orroroo, selling 162 Leahcim-blds at $180.
Elders Jamestown livestock agent Jack Coleman said young ewes sold to firm competition, while secondary types eased $15.
Landmark Jamestown livestock agent Shannon Jaeschke said there were a lot more breeding ewes offered than what there had been previously.
“With a few stubbles starting to come available, people are looking for a one-year job to buy and join, then either lamb or sell joined,” he said.
Breeding ewes sold to $182, with most sales between $120-$145.
Baderloo Partners, Spalding, sold 52 Leahcim-bld 2.5-year-old ewes at $182, while Martindale Holdings sold 140 Martindale-bld 2.5-3.5yo from Roseworthy Campus, at $152.
LJ&HA Staker, Jamestown, sold 139 F2 Dohne 4.5yo Babirra/Ulooloo-bld ewes at $172.
JA&AJ Palmer Family Trust, Black Springs, sold 90 Baderloo-bld 5.5yo ewes at $140.
South Gap Pastoral, via Port Augusta, sold 170 Glenville-bld 6.5yo ewes at $128.
Mr Jaeschke said a run of about 1400, 6.5yo ewes from Moonaree Station, via Port Augusta, was a standout, selling to $118 and averaging $114.
The top price for wether lambs was $110 for 421 Greenfields-bloods from LR&CH Nutt, Black Rock, and for 113 Bradfield-blds from GR&JE Thomas, Mannanarie.
A limited number of crossbred lambs were offered, with Sawers Farms, Wilkatana, via Port Augusta, offering a run of 725, with the top pen making $116 and an overall average of $107.
There was less demand for older wethers, with Paratoo Props, via Yunta, selling 250 Moorundie Park-blds to the top price of $103.
In the ewe lamb section, Glenrest Trading, Jamestown, sold 60 Anama/Gum Hill-bld April/May 2016-drops at $132.
The next Jamestown sale – the last of the year – is on December 15, with an expected yarding of about 20,000.
There will also be three sales held during February and March due to large numbers coming from the North West pastoral regions.
