MELASHDAN stud at Tumby Bay decided to interface its seventh annual on-property White Dorper and Dorper ram sale with AuctionsPlus, with pleasing results.
A good crowd of 22 registered buyers operated in the main auction, alongside 11 registered bidders online from four states.
The Fiegert family sold all 54 White Dorper rams offered in the main auction, plus 10 Dorper rams for the first time, while 32 unshorn flock rams were offered in a mini-auction.
All 96 rams were well-grown 12 to 19 month-old paddock-run rams, averaging 90 kilograms.
The White Dorpers sold to $3300, averaging $1301; the 10 Dorper rams sold to $2000, averaging $850; while the 32 flock rams sold to $700, averaging $650.
The $3300 top price White Dorper ram sold to Darren Borlase, Pearlah. It was well-structured with good early growth rates and a Maternal Carcass Production index of 14. The $2000 Dorper sold to Jim Casanova, Port Lincoln.
Volume buyer Greg Baker, Kondoolka Station, via Port Augusta, provided solid support throughout the sale, taking home 25 rams.
Six rams also headed to NSW courtesy of AuctionPlus, while another 16 rams sold shortly after the sale.
Stud principal Gary Fiegert was pleased with the sale and would use AuctionPlus in the future.
“The top end of our sale seemed a little quieter than we expected, but overall a full clearance of an extra 50 rams with a solid average price was an excellent result,” he said. “It has been great exposure for the stud.”
Mr Fiegert said Dorper rams were ideal prime lamb sires with good early growth and excellent lambing ease.
“They excel in a wide variety of climatic conditions,” he said. “Melashdan aims to breed Dorper ewes that lamb twice a year with lambs dressing out about 23kg at 24 weeks.
“This represents what this breed is all about and because they have such great lambing ease, they also make very good terminal sires.”
