Grand champion fine/medium ram
Gre Gre North based stud Oak Bank has won grand champion fine/medium wool ram.
Judge Simon Paterson, New Zealand, described the two year-old ram as an “absolute colossus” with “great, rich wool”.
Principal Warren McRae said the six-took ram weighed 150 kilograms and was sired by Oak Bank TP7, which was reserve champion Victorian ram a few years ago.
The winning fine/medium wool ram was champion medium wool ram at Balmoral Show and it set to be retained in stud where Mr McRae said it would play a part in aiming to produce productive, good stretchy, long rams.
“It’s probably one of the best we’ve bred,” Mr McRae said.
Grand champion fine/medium ewe
Nareeb Nareeb Merino stud, Glenthompson, won grand champion fine/medium wool ewe.
Judge Simon Paterson, New Zealand, said the ewe was of a “great type” and stood very well, with good coverage, skin quality and production, which put it above its competitors.
Stud manager Richard Beggs said the ewe was by One Oak 115 that was purchased at Sheepvention, Hamitlon, in 2012 for that year’s top price for $19,500, and out of one of their stud ewes.
The August-shorn, four-tooth ewe was supreme exhibit at the Campbell Town Show, Tasmania, and was part of the winning Victorian Pair.
Mr Beggs said they planned to retain the ewe in the stud and do an embryo transfer program with her.
