AGRICULTURAL Science student Jana Dixon has been awarded the $2000 Lois Harris scholarship in recognition of academic excellence.
Jana received the highest Tertiary Entrance Score on completion of year 12 with an outstanding 99.15 and now attends the University of Adelaide.
The scholarship, administered through the Agricultural Bureau of SA, is in its 17th year and recognises high achieving students entering into their first year of tertiary education.
Agricultural Bureau of SA Chair Mark Grossman said the Lois Harris Scholarship is aimed at supporting and encouraging young people who are looking to pursue a career in the agricultural industry.
“We are very pleased to present this year’s scholarship to Jana who is pursuing a career as an agricultural consultant specialising in agronomy, livestock and finance,” he said.
“Jana looks forward to her career in agriculture and is motivated and passionate about her future.”
Jana is the third generation in the family farming business in the Clare Valley, half way between Farrell Flat and Mintaro.
She helps out on the farm which is predominantly cropping with the addition of sheep over the summer months.
Jana said the scholarship was much appreciated and would go towards costs such as textbooks, travel expenses and university trips, including one to the South East in the second semester.
“Having seen first-hand the hard work of farmers, it is important that family farms remain viable and to work with farming families would be very rewarding,” she said.
The scholarship is named in honour of a former ABA member (1995-1998), the late Lois Harris in recognition and support of young people entering into the agricultural industry in SA.
