WITH a good season in the Esperance area and solid cattle prices, the expectation was this year's Allegria Park Angus bull sale would go pretty well.
But no one quite expected to see a $7720 average across the 25 bulls offered and sold.
This represented a massive $3384 lift on last year's sale average and a gross of close to $100,000 more than the 2015 sale.
It was a great result and left Allegria Park stud principals Andrew and Fiona Kuss a little stunned after the sale.
The result was some reflection of the stud's heavy investment in genetics over the years and many at the sale commented on the evenness of this year's line-up.
Last year's top price of $5600 was easily eclipsed when Wes Graham outlaid $9500 for the bull in lot 5.
This bull, Allegria Park Earnan K45, was a Connealy Earnan son and out of Allegria Park Queenie G7 and was a June 28, 2014 drop calf.
Mr Graham, who was also the buyer of last year's top price bull, said K45 represented a new genetic line for his operation and was from a well-regarded US bloodline.
"He is the only son of this sire for sale in WA this year and I was keen to get hold of him," Mr Graham said.
"He is a well-balanced bull and nice and thick."
Mr Graham, a long-time Allegria Park buyer, said overall he was impressed with the stud's sale team.
"This was probably the most even line of bulls ever offered by the stud for sale," he said.
Earnan K45 not only looked the part, but also had the Estimated Breeding Value (EBVs) figures to back up its looks.
It was +3.5 for birthweight, +55 for 200-day weight, +105 for 400-day weight and +134 for 600-day weight.
At +20 it had one of the best EBvs for milk in the catalogue and also registered +131 on the Angus Breeding Index. Other index figures included +124 for Domestic, +138 for Heavy Grain and +129 for Heavy Grass.
The philosophy 'the first one is often the cheapest', certainly rang true at this sale, with Mr Graham also purchasing lot one for $6500.
This bull was also from US genetics, being sired by Sydgen Trust 6228 and out of Allegria Park Wilcoola G3. It had a 200-day weight EBV of +56, a 400-day weight of +92 and a 600-day weight of +131.
Mr Graham rounded out his purchases later in the sale by buying lot 19, Allegria Park Regent K55 for $8500.
This bull was a Tuwharetoa Regent D45 son and out of Allegria Park Wilcoola D8.
The second top price of $8500 was hit on six different occasions during the sale.
D Piercy & Co, Esperance, paid that amount for lot 8, Allegria Park Thunderbird K41.
Sired by SAV Thunderbird and out of Allegria Park G48, K41 had a birthweight of +4.5 and a 600-day weight of +121.
On the Domestic index and Heavy Grain index it registered +110 and +106 respectively.
The Piercy account also bought lot nine for $8000.
Volume buyer of the sale was repeat Allegria Park client, Katanka Pty Ltd, Condingup.
The operation bought five bulls in total, paying $8500 apiece for lots 10 and 15.
Lot 10 was a Sydgen Trust son that had a solid +91 for 400-day weight and +124 for 600-day weight, while lot 15 was a Cherylton Performer son with a +85 400-day weight EBV.
Adina Grazing, Esperance, was another multiple buyer taking lot 11 for $8500 and lot 17 for $7000.
Ridley Plains, Esperance, also outlaid $8500 for lot 13, which was sired by the home-bred Allegria Park Infinity G16.
Guns Gully was another volume buyer at the sale taking two bulls to a top of $7000, while Sanderson Bros, Esperance, also bought two at $7000 each.
SC & FH Tiller, Condingup, bought two bulls including a SAV Thunderbird son for $8000.
Landmark Brindley & Gale auctioneer Neil Brindley was full of praise for the sale and the Allegria Park line-up.
"It was a great sale," Mr Brindley said.
"It reflected what is happening in the beef industry at the moment and buyers were able to operate with confidence.
"The good season and people keeping extra heifers this year helped lift the sale and the quality of the offering was also a major factor."
