AN “exceptional” run of grown steers has set a new record for the Mount Compass saleyards.
A yarding of 126 Angus heavyweight steers from the northern Adelaide region reached a top price of $2336 at Wednesday’s sale.
Pro-Stock manager Kym Endersby, Mount Compass, said the sale had exceeded expectations.
“It was nothing like what we expected,” he said.
“As far as dollars per head it was very much (a record price).”
The run of steers weighed in at an average 805 kilograms and sold for an average price of $1800.
“This was an exceptional run of bullocks,” he said.
“We don’t normally see that many but they were fat and ready to be sold.”
Mr Endersby said the sale itself was following the recent trend of high cattle prices.
He said Pro-Stock cattle had averaged $2.84/kg across the entire sale.
In comparison, the sale at this time last year had an average price of $1.55/kg.
Mr Endersby said the sale had a yarding of 1020 cattle, with 155 cows, 200 grown steers and the balance of trade cattle and stores.
He said, in response to the prices, numbers had been up, with recent yardings between 700 and 1000 each week.
“We keep saying it is going to slow down but it hasn’t yet,” he said.
“The vendors are not used to these prices and they are receiving more money so they are selling more cattle.
“If prices slow up the numbers will go away but if prices stay where they are and the season keeps going, we’d expect the flow to continue.”
