A TRIO of meaty April 2013-drop rams was placed first in the interbreed pen of three rams under 1.5 years for Clayton and Andrea Rowett's Ulandi Park stud, Marrabel.
White Suffolks, the breed which had won the previous year, were second for Ian Gilmore's Baringa stud, Oberon, NSW.
In third place were Border Leicesters shown by Trevor and Judy James, Coolawang, Mundulla.
Judge Murray Brown, Forbes, NSW, said it had been a challenging section to judge.
"We all have our own personal bias and the breeds we're familiar with, so it it hard to remain neutral,' he said.
"My personal top four were the Poll Dorsets, the White Suffolks, the Border Leicesters and the Suffolks.
These four groups are outstanding for representing their breed."
Mr Brown said he ''just could not go past'' the Poll Dorsets for first place.
"I'm looking for plenty of meat and the Poll Dorsets are carrying that attribute," he said.
"The Poll Dorsets have lots of width through the loin and are very even."
He also saw plenty to like about the James' Border Leicesters.
"The Border Leicesters are a very even group and carrying plenty of meat," Mr Brown said. "They are offering plenty to the Border Leicester industry."
The White Suffolks were also impressive.
"The White Suffolks are very structurally correct and have great width and depth of carcase," he said.
