A 2.5-YEAR-OLD March-shorn ram from Graham and Di Jenke's Wattle Glen stud at Strathalbyn was a major stand-out in the Corriedale judging on Friday, according to judge Geoff Risbey, Stanbury, Camperdown, Vic.
Mr Risbey said the "beautiful, stretchy, tall" sire, which had won the ram over 1.5-years class, "stood well, and was a champion in the making".
"He was a bit smaller than his counterparts, but he should thicken up nicely as he ages," he said.
Mr Jenke said the 26.9-micron ram was a grandson of Wattle Glen's 2011 Corriedale feature breed champion and had won his under 1.5yo class at last year's Adelaide show.
He weighed 105.5 kilograms and had an eye muscle depth of 44 millimetres and 9mm fat depth.
In the champion ewe judging, Mr Risbey said the competition was very close between the grand champion from the Lush family's Corriedale Hills stud at Inman Valley, and the reserve shown by Wattle Glen.
"Both the champion and reserve ewe are truly exceptional," he said.
"I went for the over 1.5yo ewe from Wattle Glen because she is a brilliant woolled sheep. She has a dense, high-yield fleece and a reasonable scale - she's not a big ewe by any means.
"But she is upstanding, which put her just ahead of the under 1.5yo ewe."
