BIG, meaty rams caught plenty of eyes at the Illawong sale, Parawa, held on Thursday last week.
The sale saw increased demand for the Texel offering, while a Poll Dorset ram attracted attention, leading to a lift in the top price paid.
Principal Charlotte Morley said meat was the major focus in her breeding program.
"I like good backsides and good loins and they're as long as they need to be," she said.
Ms Morley said the rams had presented well, despite the season.
"This is the third year we haven't had a spring or an autumn, and the rams are all grass fed," she said.
"They're a tough lot of sheep, which is what I'm trying to breed."
The top price of $950 was paid for lot 1, a big Poll Dorset ram.
The young twin had an eye muscle area of 25.23cm square.
Repeat buyer Alexander MacLachlan, Myponga, said he admired the ram for its good figures, particularly in the eye muscle.
"He's a good, well-shaped, ram, with good confirmation," he said.
"He looked to be in good nick to go out and start working."
In total the MacLachlans bought four Poll Dorset rams and two Texels, making them the volume buyers of the sale.
The top price of $900 for a Texel ram was paid twice by Martin Liebeknecht, Robertstown, for the first two lots on offer.
He said both rams had “excellent muscling”.
The sale was conducted by Elders with Tom Penna taking bids.
