DURING question time at parenting class, common queries normally revolve around contractions, overnight bags, nappies and baby foods - but not for Yorke Peninsula Poll Hereford stud breeder Tom Honner.
"My one question was 'how could we bring our baby into the world early'," he joked.
Tom's wife Amy was due just after last year's Royal Adelaide Show, but the family were hoping to capitalise on the "show baby" initiative to celebrate the 175th year of the event.
"The Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of SA decided in its 175th year to offer free life memberships to any baby born in SA during the 2014 Royal Adelaide Show," Tom said.
The show ran from September 5-14, but baby Honner was due on the 16th.
"He came six days early, which was brilliant," Mr Honner said.
He said baby James 'Jimmy' Honner "hit the ground running" on September 10, after only a two-hour labour.
Jimmy is Tom and Amy's first child and will be the sixth generation to live on the family farm at Brentwood, where they run the Minlacowie Poll Hereford stud, a commercial Merino flock and cropping.
The Honner family have been showing in Adelaide since the 1960s, with accolades including all-breeds champion steer in the early days and supreme all-breeds grand champion male and female of the show more recently in 2007.
"Every generation has had some involvement in the RAS and local country shows," Mr Honner said.
Last year the family did not show cattle in Adelaide because of the impending birth, but are back again this year with a team of three Poll Herefords for the feature-breed showing.
Tom said he looked forward to meeting other show babies and their families.
"I can see in the years to come there will be good mateship among the kids born in that 175th year," he said.
During the 175th event 365 babies were born - 187 boys and 178 girls.
