PRICES at the Strathalbyn store cattle sale on March stayed firm despite the continuing dry season impacting the yarding.
In the yarding of about 800, there was a large contingent of cows and calves as well as younger weaner steers and heifers.
Landmark Strathalbyn’s Richard Snoswell said cattle above 300 kilograms continued selling well.
“A lot of the smaller cattle were marketed today because of the ordinary season,” he said.
“But it was still a good, solid sale.”
Mr Snoswell said the sale also benefited from some new and returning buyers, with continuing interest from the Adelaide Hills.
A northern pastoral order picked up a large number of cows and calves.
The first pen to make a sale was that of eight Angus steers from Longmead Angus, Woodside.
The 11-month-old to 12mo steers, with an average weight of 395kg, sold for $840.
The second pen, eight 10-12mo, from PR Sandland, sold for $820.
RD&S Ahrns sold 12 Angus 9-10mo old steers for $775. A pen of nine Angus bulls, from Fala Brae, sold for $750.
There were 10 smaller bulls that sold for $565, with 14 bull calves making $350.
A pen of 20 North Coast Pastoral Angus heifers, with an average weight of 344kg, sold for $730.
Grandview Farm offered a pen of 12 mixed-age Angus cows, with 3-5mo calves at foot, which sold for $1140.
