LIVESTOCK SA has had a "fantastic" response to contest nominations for its first board election, with seven candidates for five board vacancies to be decided at the annual meeting next month.
Chairman Richard Halliday is urging as many of the nearly 1400 members as possible to vote for those who they believe will ensure strong industry representation.
The five vacancies cover half of the 10-member board, with Penny Schulz, Field, and Jean Evans, Upper Sturt, nominating to stand again next month. The other five members will be up for election next year.
The new nominations are for Andrew Clarke, Allandale Station, Oodnadatta; Bill Nosworthy, Lake Hamilton Station, Port Lincoln; Joe Keynes, Lorelmo Keyneton Station, Keyneton; Steve Radeski, Adelaide, who is also ANZ state agribusiness manager; and Robyn Verrall, Keith.
Mr Halliday said it was "fantastic to see so much interest in Livestock SA" and the organisation's work on behalf of cattle, sheep and goat producers.
"To receive more nominations than positions is a bit of a sign that people agree with what we are trying to do, and acknowledgement that SA needs representation for livestock producers," he said.
Mr Halliday said it was a chance for the successful nominees to shape national policy through the peak bodies of which Livestock SA was a member, including the Sheepmeat Council of Australia, Wool Producers Australia and Cattle Council of Australia.
Ballot papers are being posted this week to all members and must be returned to Livestock SA by 5pm on Monday, August 25.
Mr Halliday, vice-president Jack England, Geoff Power, Alexander MacLachlan, and Andy Withers, are the board members with another one-year term to complete.
The successful nominees will be announced at the annual meeting at Roseworthy Campus Tavern on Friday, August 29.
This will be followed by a tour of the Roseworthy facilities and the Sheepmeat Council of Australia Sheep Producers forum.
