A TEAM of bulls from Bordertown's Days Whiteface stud were the cream that kept rising to the top in the Poll Hereford judging at the 50th Merial Eprinex Herefords Australia National Show & Sale at Wodonga, Vic, on Wednesday last week, winning four of eight broad ribbons.
Lachy and Lou Day and family's attempt to repeat the clean sweep of the junior, intermediate and senior champion division titles achieved in 2014 was spoilt only by grand champion Ivybank John J10.
The two-year-old, exhibited by Allan and Colleen Green, Ivybank Partnership, Walcha, NSW, went all the way to the grand title after being sashed intermediate champion.
He tipped the scales at 1000 kilograms with an eye muscle area of 129 square centimetres and fat of 23 millimetres rump and 13mm rib.
"He's always been easy-doing, he's done all of the work on his own," Mr Green said.
"He has natural thickness and he has balance, even though he's a big bull."
In his grand championship line-up Canadian judge Lance Leachman praised the quality of the bulls.
"The sires out here are truly exceptional and I think you have a lot of opportunity and a lot of possibilities as a breed going forward when you can assemble a group of bulls like these," he said.
Mr Leachman - a fourth- generation cattleman - is a partner in his family's Big Gully Farm at Maidstone, Sasketchewan, running 150 registered Hereford cows.
He has judged previously in Canada, the United States and Denmark.
Days Carbine J141 - the reserve intermediate champion - got the nod for reserve grand champion.
"He has a big top and is ideal in terms of frame,'' Mr Leachman said.
"You have to appreciate his balance and eye appeal and when you see him on the move he has a lot of integrity and flexibility."
Carbine was one of the first sons of Days' $90,000 record-price bull Days Calibre G74, sold by the stud at the 2013 Dubbo National Show & Sale in NSW, to Bowen stud, Barraba, NSW, and Melville Park, Vasey, Vic.
The 23-month-old weighed 828kg with an EMA of 120sqcm and fat of 20mm rump and 13mm rib.
The other Calibre son in the team Days Debonair J188 was the junior champion.
Mr Day said Calibre - used in the stud as a yearling - was leaving progeny with real carcase merit.
"They have a bit of class with softness and that carcase we were chasing," he said.
"To have the two bulls in his first drop of sons win two broad ribbons and get $30,000 (for the reserve intermediate champion) is a real thrill."
Another Calibre G74 son is reserved for the Dubbo National Show & Sale next month.
The Days' senior champion, Days Uriah, was a long-bodied bull by Melville Excel with an EMA figure of +5.2.
The other two SA exhibitors were also among the ribbons.
Allan and Heather Morgan, Morganvale, Willalooka, took a second and a fifth placing, and Chris and Pam Steer, Warrensville stud, Bordertown, two fifth ribbons.
Days Whiteface romped home for the most successful exhibitor award after claiming four firsts and two seconds in the individual classes with their six head.
The Hereford classes judged prior to the Poll Herefords were also well contested with EDR Civil War from the Russell family's EDR Herefords, Wynyard, Tas, the grand champion.
