YOUTH Minister Zoe Bettison is encouraging 15- to 24-year-old South Australians from regional areas to consider applying for the 2015 YMCA Youth Parliament.
Participants undergo a six-day residential camp in Adelaide from July 5-10, which includes sitting days at Parliament House.
“Youth Parliament gives our youth a voice on issues that matter to them,” Ms Bettison said.
“In 2015, we are encouraging more country kids to apply as there are many issues specific to our remote and regional communities that should be discussed.
“The Bills passed by the Youth Parliament will be formally presented to me as Youth Minister for the government’s consideration.
“I think it would be wise for all parliamentarians to listen carefully to what they have to say.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Youth Parliament, an initiative which gives young people a unique opportunity to learn about the political process.
Participants develop practical skills in developing legislation, speech writing and debating.
Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock said young people from across SA should consider making their and their community’s voices heard.
“We want more young people from regional areas to be involved because the issues facing rural SA are often complex and unique to certain areas,” Mr Brock said.
“Regional scholarships are available for travel to and from Adelaide for training in May and for the residential week in July.
“It’s important young people from outside of Adelaide have a say on the future of our state.”
Youth Parliament has played a key role in educating more than 1000 young people about parliament and these scholarships will support travel costs.
Applications close on Friday, March 13.
Youth Parliament is managed by YMCA SA and supported by the state government through the Office for Youth.
