ONE of SA's outback gems, Coober Pedy, will celebrate its centenary this year.
The town, best known for its opal-mining heritage, will host celebrations from February to May featuring a variety of special events.
Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said visitors would be treated to genuine outback hospitality when they made the trek to the South Australian outback.
"This event is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore a unique destination where half the population lives in underground dugouts and the 4000 residents come from more than 40 countries," Mr Bignell said.
"This is a huge year for the historic town, visiting it should be on everyone’s bucket list. From the stunning Breakaways and the Painted Desert, to noodling (fossicking) for opals and experiencing the underground way of life – there’s something for everyone.
"Coober Pedy also recently received international recognition when it made CNN’s coveted 10 top destinations to visit in 2015.
"Where else in the world can you march in a street parade, attend a ball and stay in an underground hotel in an outback location?"
Special events include the Centenary Launch, Centenary Street Party and Multicultural Festival, 100 Year Ball, Welcome Back to Coober Pedy, Mosaic Centennial Garden and more.
"It’s also the perfect time to visit the region for a rare spectacle of Lake Eyre filled with water," Mr Bignell said.
"Usually an empty salt pan spanning 9500 square kilometres, visitors are treated to a horizon of water and wildlife in a spectacular outback setting."

The Coober Pedy Retail, Business and Tourism Association has also produced a new tourism brochure which is available from Coober Pedy, Adelaide, Alice Springs and other major towns.
