FIRST-SEASON sires will be in the spotlight at this year's Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale to be held at the Morphettville sales complex from March 9 to 11.
Former Australian champion So You Think (New Zealand) is the most famous name to appear in the list of new sires, with two yearlings to be offered on the first evening of selling.
Lot 64 is a brown colt, the first foal from the Stravinsky mare Enzed Girl (NZ), nominated by Ballarto Lodge, Pakenham South, Vic.
The second, lot 100, is offered by SA's Cornerstone Stud - a bay filly out of the Danehill mare Isle Of Gibraltar, a stakes-placed dam of three winners to date.
Another 'new boy' already creating a big impact on the Australian stud scene is stakeswinner Smart Missile, standing at Arrowfield Stud, NSW.
At the recent Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast, 33 Smart Missile yearlings were sold to a top price of $700,000 and an average of $179,394.
His one representative in the Adelaide sale, lot 81 out of the winning mare Goldfinger, is offered by Goldin Farms, Angaston - formerly the 'homestead' section of Lindsay Park - and is sure to create plenty of interest.
Also on the first-season list are two new sires closely related to Black Caviar.
They do not come any more closely related than Moshe, Black Caviar's full brother and winner of three races, now standing at Eliza Park, Vic. He is represented by five yearlings including one out of Silver Mist, a Last Tycoon mare and producer of several winners.
The Young family of Glenrae Stud, Port Broughton, is standing the new sire Typhon, by God's Own out of Scandinavia - dam of Helsinge, best known as dam of Black Caviar.
The stud has four yearlings by Typhon on offer.
Other new sires to catch the eye are Dream Ahead (United States), champion sprinter in Europe 2011 and champion three-year-old in France and GB the same year; Gio Ponti (US), champion older male in US in 2009 and already sire of stakeswinners in that country; Uncle Mo (US), champion 2yo colt in the US in 2010, and Zoffany (Ireland) joint champion Irish 3yo miler in 2011.
Cornerstone Stud will be the largest SA representative at the sale with a draft of 42. Other local studs with major offerings are Mill Park, Meningie - always with a quality draft, this year a total of 18; Ducatoon Park, Kadina, with 16; Little Hills Pastoral, Yorketown, with 10, and the famous Balcrest Stud, Balhannah, with eight including lot 173, a filly by Artie Schiller (US) out of home-bred Group 1 winner Pipkin.
Heading the list from interstate is Barramul Stud, Widden Valley, NSW, with a draft of 25, and Eliza Park International, Kerrie, Vic, with 16.
