THERE are a number of reasons for seedstock producers to display their best stock at the Royal Adelaide Show not the least being a whopping 5000 entries in the beef section this year.
To celebrate the show's 175th anniversary, the beef cattle committee has introduced three new interbreed awards which could send a couple of exhibitors home with heavier pockets than usual.
For the first time, interbreed judging will include the selection of an all breeds supreme champion female and all breeds supreme champion bull, both with $1000 in prize money attached.
These two animals will then go head-to-head, with one ultimately named the all breeds champion beef cattle exhibit in show – and taking home a $3000 cheque.
All three awards are sponsored by Frontier Services.
Beef Cattle Committee chairman Jock Gosse said the three new awards had been considered by the committee for a while and the 175th celebrations had made them a reality.
"What better way to bring these in than with the 175th celebrations," he said.
"It's worth getting an animal to the show."
The new awards will be in addition to the existing interbreed competitions: the S Kidman & Co prize for champion interbreed sires progeny and reserve, the Elders and Stock Journal prize for all breed junior champion pair, and the Princess Royal prize for all breed grand champion pair.
This year is shaping up to be a great one for the beef section, with stud cattle entries up by 200 head and steers up by 20 head.
