NSW grazier Craig Morton believes a co-operative approach needs to be taken to help overcome issues in the Murray-Darling Basin.
Craig farms at Barraroo Station, via Menindee, on the Darling River. He runs Hereford cattle and sheep for prime lamb production.
"I think the problem is that the Basin isn't a state issue, it's a federal issue and should be treated as such," he said.
"It's got to be a shared situation.
"In the past, more and more licences were granted and more and more water was allocated.
"Something should have been done about this years ago."
He wants this co-operative approach to start with the Senate Select Committee's inquiry into the Murray-Darling Basin Plan's implementation.
"From my point of view, the problems with the Basin have come about because the government over-allocated water allocations up north," he said.
Craig would also like the government to consider putting more weirs in, particularly at Menindee, between Menindee and Wilcannia, above Wilcannia and at Pooncarie, to try and keep the river full.
