Pathways to improved productivity and profitability in local farming systems will be explored at a grains research forum in Kadina next week.
Lentil marketing, lentil research and development, chicken litter use and zinc application are topics to be discussed at the GRDC grains research update, to be held at the Kadina Football Netball Clubrooms on August 13.
GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Bill Long, Ardrossan, says the update will provide local growers with a unique opportunity to hear from several industry experts who will be sharing new knowledge from the research initiatives in which they are involved.
“The Update will be a worthwhile forum for growers to learn about the advances being made in grains R&D and how these can help to improve yields and returns,” he said.
Australian Grain Exports international marketing manager Brett Dodson will provide growers with some insight into the factors likely to impact on lentil supply, demand and pricing over the next six to 12 months.
The latest in lentil R&D, coming out of Australia as well as Canada, will be detailed by Larn McMurray from the SARDI, who will discuss breeding of herbicide-tolerant varieties as well as other important traits.
The economics of using chicken litter as an alternative fertiliser and soil treatment will be explored by Pat Redden and Brendan Wallis from Rural Directions, while Mike McLaughlin from CSIRO and the University of Adelaide will speak about innovations in zinc fertiliser products.
Progress in research into the benefits of bent leg furrow openers will be outlined by James Barr from the University of SA’s Agricultural Machinery Research and Design Centre.
The Update will be from 9am to 1pm with catering provided.
