YOUNG people in the dairy industry stood out in the dairy shed at the Royal Adelaide Show this year, particularly in the Ayrshire ring.
Dairyfarmer Caitlin Liebich, 23, Jervois, estimates about half of those exhibiting in the Ayrshire section were under 25.
She said this was in part driven by an initiative of the breed managers to encourage junior members to get involved, and stay involved, by offering an Ayrshire calf as a prize.
Caitlin said involvement in the industry taught many life skills.
Fellow breeder, 24-year-old Ben Hentshke, said calves provided an incentive for those coming up in the industry.
Caitlin and Ben grew up in the dairy industry, each with a strong family background in the Ayrshire breed, and hope to continue in the field.
"There are enough positive sides and I just hope the milk price sorts itself out and becomes more rewarding for our efforts," Ben said.
Ben is focused on the commercial side of the industry but says the showring is still a priority.
"I use it as a chance to get off farm," he said.
"We're a real social group, and it's a way to catch up and get a break from routine."
