A TEAM from west Victoria has claimed the inaugural title of National Dairy Challenge champions.
The challenge was held on the Fleurieu Peninsula and called on teams of four from dairy regions throughout Australia to try their hand at a range of tasks related to the industry.
The event was the brain child of Dairy SA project officer and 2014 RIRDC SA rural woman of the year Penny Schulz who spent her winner's bursary - along with industry support - on creating the event.
“The Fleurieu is making history with this pilot program,” Ms Schulz said.
“Dairyfarming is a complex and skilled industry and we’re trying to set a pretty high standard of skills and knowledge.”
The winning team of four came from Heywood and Portland, Vic, and was made up of young dairy enthusiasts Michael Hawker, Nicole McRae, Madeline Campbell and Ebony Churchill.
Mr Hawker was also the participant with the highest individual point score.
The second placed team came from south east Qld.
