ON the eve of the International Red Poll Congress, Alan and Marilyn Wilson and their son Peter, Oakwood, Brentwood, continued to impress the Royal Adelaide Show judges, winning grand champion bull with Oakwood Zorba Top Gain.
The heaviest bull exhibited during the show – 1130 kilograms at four years of age – the sire had a P8 of 14 millimetres, rib of 13mm and a meaty eye muscle area of 120 centimetres square.
Previously named junior and grand champion at the same event two years ago, Peter Wilson said the Oakwood Zorba 2-sired bull had two drops of calves on the ground that were "really good – just like him".
Having exhibited Red Polls at the show since 1962, the grand champion was one of many for the Wilson family, but they were very pleased to see the sire outrank his competitors.
"We retained him for use on the stud because of his overall size. He's well-structured, smooth and correct," Mr Wilson said.
While it is unlikely the bull will return to the showring, next year his progeny may well take his place.
